How could you tell?
BIG! I like BIG! Lol.
I just like the tactical potential they bring. You've got this big hulking beast with cannons, hangars and logistical/tactical capabilities. And it's killing everything. But if you don't play your cards right, little ships are going to get in and take your guns and subsystems out, and then -their- bigger ships are going to stomp you dead.
That and I like the management potential it has in some games. If you look at Silent Hunter 3 or Universal Combat, I really liked their crew systems (though I think it could have been worked more smoothly in both cases). The meat of the game is of course the combat scenarios, but underscoring it all and helping immersion is the fact that you have to manage your resources to repair damage, cycle out tired crew members, load torpedoes or whatever. With that, your ship suddenly seems alive, similar to a real-life carrier or frigate; and it's been found time and time again people actually grow kind of attached to this.
Then you should try out the Discovery Mod for Freelancer!

RE: Jumpgate evolution
Thing is, Jumpgate Evolution probably won't reach Beta until sometime next year if they proceed with current pace.

RE: Jumpgate evolution
I love capships, I don't even alwas have to fly them, but flying in my own fighter, next to a huge ship at least 10 times my size, it just feels good. Seeing fighters trying to blow it up, while I chase them trying to stop them shooting at the cap.
In eve, you can get capships, or fly a small ship. But it doesn't feel like a real battle. This game looks far more intense.
Really reminds me of allegiance, only with better gameplay and graphics.

RE: Jumpgate evolution
I do love scale, I wish that the battlecruiser series had been done better as it is really what I have always sought in a singleplayer experience. The only thing that ever truly came close was Nexus Jupiter incident, though that wasn't nearly as in-depth as I wish a game would be (closing off bulkheads to prevent the spread of fire, evacuating personnel from lower decks and requiring breathing apparatus, engaging fire control and maintaining power).
I think NSW is going to bring the perfect mix of scale and accessibility, especially for a multiplayer environment.

JGE looks alienish (if that is a word) and NSW looks more raw. From what I gather NSW will have no shields on there ships and will use ammo style weapons. JGE reminds me more of FL and Earth and Beyond put together. I will definitely be trying this one out when it does come out (was just pushed back from its original June release). And don't forget to look at Black Prophecy cyberdaemon.
MMO= Massively Multiplayer Online. Which hopefully Naum will be. JGE will be an MMORPG. Where as NAUM will be as you've stated. The only reason i've looked into JGE because it has elements of you flying the craft and shooting for yourself. Where as other games like WoW and EVE are all button bashing and require 0 skill to play.
Woudn't surprise me if JGE had elements of button bashing though.
